Rick's Note

This is what I recommend for beginners. The EG4 ecosystem is DIY-friendly, well-documented, and the batteries stack easily. You own the hardware outright - no subscription, no removal fees, no one draining it for grid services. You can always add more batteries later.

Two of the current EG4 PowerPro 14.3 kWh wallmounts give you 28.6 kWh of usable storage - comfortably 12+ hours of whole-home backup including AC. The sweet spot for most Texas homeowners. (Yes, this kit costs more than the old 20 kWh number - that's because the Sol-Ark 15K and the new 280Ah PowerPro both moved. You're also getting 40% more capacity.)

Rick's Note

This is close to my personal setup. The Sol-Ark 15K is the gold standard - it handles whole-home backup, works with any 48V battery, and the monitoring app is excellent. At this size, consider a hybrid install: buy the gear here, hire a vetted electrician for the connection and permit. I can help you find one.

The EcoFlow Plug-and-Play

The fastest path to a whole-home battery you own and control. No permit-pulling, no server-rack wiring - the DELTA Pro Ultra is a single UL 9540 unit with an integrated 7.2 kW inverter. If you've been looking at a subscription battery like Base Power, this is what owning the equivalent hardware looks like instead.

Rick's Note

Higher $/kWh than the EG4 rack batteries above, but you're paying for deployment speed and zero electrical work on the base setup. The big win over a subscription: you own it, you set the charge floor, no one drains it to 20% for grid services, and there's no removal fee when you move. Add a Smart Home Panel 2 if you want automatic, circuit-level backup instead of extension cords.

Installation costs not included. The EG4 rack systems and Sol-Ark 15K benefit from a licensed electrician for the 200A interconnect and permit. The EcoFlow base setup is genuinely DIY; the Smart Home Panel 2 install involves your main panel.
All hardwired systems require permits in most jurisdictions. Check your local codes before installation.
Federal Section 25D residential clean energy credit was repealed by the One Big Beautiful Bill (P.L. 119-21, July 2025) for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. State and utility rebates may still apply (CA, NY, CT, CO). Texas has no state-level credit. Consult a tax professional.
